A manageable book stack
A small current selection leaves the rest of the shelf available for another day.
Separate current from possible
Choose the book you are reading now and perhaps one you may open next. Put the rest of the possible reading back where you can find it. A large stack can make choosing feel like unfinished work. A modest selection lets the current book keep its place without demanding a decision every evening.
Give each book a role
If you read more than one book, make the distinction clear: a longer story, a reference you consult and a collection you dip into. The roles need not be strict, but they explain why each book is nearby. Remove a book that no longer suits the moment and keep its bookmark if you plan to return.
Review the stack occasionally
Look at the selection after a week or when you finish something. Keep the books that still interest you and shelve the others. The stack is a temporary working arrangement rather than a promise to finish everything in order. Let it change with your curiosity and available attention.
