A bookmark with a next step

Leave yourself a clear beginning when a book has to wait.

Mark the precise place

Put the bookmark at the page where you intend to resume. If the page contains several sections, note the paragraph or heading as well. A specific marker reduces the time spent searching later. It is especially useful when your reading sessions are short or separated by several days.

Leave a short reminder

Write one sentence about the immediate context or the question you want to follow. Keep it brief enough to read before opening the next page. Avoid turning the bookmark into a full summary. Its role is to restore the thread of attention, with the book itself supplying the detail.

Use the reminder on return

Read the note, glance back if needed and continue at a comfortable pace. If the reminder was too vague, make the next one more concrete. Small practical adjustments can support an irregular reading schedule. You do not need to restart a whole chapter every time ordinary life interrupts the book.
